The Philosophy of My Art

I pursue beauty and I want to tell a story.  I work off a subconscious synthesis of art that lives in my brain – that’s my foundation. Often, I’m inspired by a place and a time that sparks an emotion – a memory from my past or a vision from my heroes.  I’m always looking, but finding an inspirational scene is a matter of chance – or persistence.  Once I find a place it’s photographed at that time. I may return to capture its mood – showing it as and when it needs to be seen.  Lighting is paramount in setting a mood, so that needs to be perfected whether at dawn or dusk, or by artificial light. Having found a place, I may introduce people to compliment or contrast, and to tell their story. The result is an invitation to the viewer to interpret what they see through their own eyes and their own experience.

Occasionally I’m lucky to find the scene and the people at the decisive moment. A natural piece of art that is handed to me by the universe, at the right time and the right place.

Some of my work is just visual – an object of beauty seen differently through my eyes. Beauty comes from colour, composition, lines and form. It may be abstract or present uncertainty, a sense of mystery. The story isn’t obvious, but the image is captivating and mesmerising.  It takes the viewers eye through a visual journey across and through the image. The journey must be clean, decisive and pleasing.  Our eyes and brain are programmed to see a scene via an unconscious visual path that can bring pleasure, or not.

I believe art has the responsibility to be worthy of being on your wall, or in a publication.  It must be timeless, engaging and above all it must give enduring pleasure and connection to the viewer.
