Driftwood [re]Collection emerges from childhood memories of walking along South Beach with my mum, collecting pieces of driftwood.
I was drawn to the strange forms of the washed up wood; weathered, broken, smoothed and reshaped by water. I would search the shoreline for the pieces that caught my attention, gathering them compulsively.
Looking back, the act of collecting feels inseparable from the landscape itself. The beach was not simply somewhere we walked; it became a place of discovery, memory and connection. The driftwood was continually arriving and disappearing, shaped by forces beyond my control, while my own relationship with it remained.
The title [re]Collection speaks to both meanings of the word: the physical act of collecting. The work is therefore less a depiction of driftwood than a return to the experience of finding it, and to a childhood relationship with the ocean and the shoreline that has continued throughout my life.
